Snow Queen

Sophie Carroll of Melrose, the Snow Queen, takes a look at her tutu during Melrose Youth Ballet's rehearsal on Nov. 19 at Corinthian Hall for 'The Nutcracker.' The MYB production this year features nearly 150 dancers, including 58 from Melrose.

Last Saturday my first assignment was to photograph dancers rehearsing for the Nutcracker. I shot this as I was leaving the hall. When I walked in the place I saw this hall of mirrors, I knew somehow I wanted to make a photograph but the director greeted me almost immediately and ushered me into the next room. On my way out I asked to use the ladies room and as I stepped out i saw this "Snow Queen" checking out her new tutu. I got two shots off before she noticed me.

Fiesta!

These photos are from the five day long St. Peter's fiesta in Gloucester for the Cape Ann Beacon. I was only able to photograph 4 of those days as I was on the late shift that week and off on Sunday. I have never attended yet alone shot the fiesta before. Even though the weather was less to be desired it was fantastic. Enjoy the shots. -Nicole

I Love this shot! I think it is one of my best shots taken of a sporting event so far in my career as a newspaper photojournalist. It is the last play of the game and the kid just sacked the Quarterback for the win at Gillette Stadium in the Div 3 Superbowl! Now that is a memory!

This weekend my husband and I invited my niece and his parents up to my parents summer cabin in Hardwick, Vermont. Niamh and Connor have never been to Vermont. We took them to a organic seed place called High Mowing Organic Seed. They are mentioned in Ben Hewitt's book, The Town That Food Saved, How One Community Found Vitality in Local Food. It is about local food in Hardwick. (Read it! You won't think about food the same way again!) We went swimming in Caspian, toured Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, explored Willey's, almost made it to Cabot, and had a huge bonfire. It was a great weekend. Here is a photo of Niamh enjoying a hybrid watermelon. Let's toast to the last days of summer!

Christian Academy Graduation

I haven't shot many freelance jobs this year but this was an interesting one. I was hired to shoot Covenant Christian Academy's first high school graduation. The class had maybe 13 graduates. I went to public school, where religion is separate from the classroom. I t was really interesting to see how religion plays a role in school life, even at graduation.

This photo is from a wedding I shot with Alison Williams last year inside The Orangerie at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA. The Orangerie has a cathedral ceiling, glass walls, and a jungle of subtropical flora. It is a perfect setting for a wedding.

Here is a photo of my mother in law Christine, my sis in law Sam, and Neice Niamh. My husband's family started the tradition of going to Arnold Arboretum on Mother's Day -- it is the only time picnics are allowed. We enjoy that so much. This year I was only able to sneak in a small amount of time but the little time I did spend was time well spent.

Clipper City Rail Trail in Newburyport. A grand opening celebration for the Newburyort trail and Salisbury's Old Eastern Marsh Trail will be May 23. I loved this assignment. I met so many good people on the trail. Everyone was so excited about it. I am so happy to have this trail go through two towns. It will be great if it connects over the train bridge over the Merrimack river, to Sailsbury, and then to Amesbury. Only time will tell.
